The Island:
Searching for a creative team……..

Who are we?
We are a bunch of professional creative organizations in Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole who do a lot of work with artists, choreographers, filmmakers, musicians and young people. We do all sorts of arts projects in theatres, schools, galleries and out in the open. We are the new v-team, who recruit young volunteers for National Trust and English Heritage. We are the staff of Brownsea Island who work for the National Trust. We are also the Bournemouth and Poole Cultural Hub - a consortium of cultural organisations and schools working together to create inspirational learning opportunities for young people. We are all led on this project by Activate Performing Arts, the dance and theatre development agency for Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole.

What do we want?
You! (If you’re up for it), for a weekend in July. We are looking for 10 young people, volunteer girls and boys from across Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole between the ages of 14 and 16 who will still be in school in 2009. Ten energetic enthusiastic, curious and creative individuals who look at the world a different way, who can help us go on a creative journey which will ultimately lead to an exceptional arts event on Brownsea Island in 2009.

To do this, from Friday 18 th to Sunday 20 th July 2008 we are going to run a weekend of activities and creative workshops to find out what Brownsea is all about, what you think about things and what our creative project might look like.

You get to stay in the Lodge on Brownsea from Friday evening to Sunday teatime. We will scramble all over the island, hear from people who tell us they know what they’re talking about, cook food together and invent ideas. On Saturday night we have to invent our own entertainment, then on Sunday morning we have to work out what it all means and plan what we are going to do next. Don’t forget by taking part in this weekend you are signing up to become part of our creative management team for Brownsea 2009 and we will need more of your time. We also hope that you might join the v-team, young volunteers for National Trust and English Heritage.

Why us?
Because you will almost certainly have better ideas than us and we want to know what they are. We want you to help us design an amazing event, an extraordinary creative project to happen on Brownsea Island in 2009, bringing together music, theatre, dance, film, visual art and all sorts of stuff we haven’t thought of yet.

We know what it might be made of but not how it is shaped or what this public event might look like.

Do we get paid?
Are you kidding? No, but it won’t cost you anything. Next question please.

What do we do if we’re interested?
You write to us, telling us why you are one of the ten people we need for the creative team. It doesn’t have to be a long letter/e-mail, but enough for us to tell what you’re like and what you bring to the table (or the island). Your letter/e-mail can have stuff with it if you like- drawings, images, sounds- anything you think we need to have in order to make us choose you. It’s up to you. Your letter must include details of your age, sex, school/group and your postal address. We also need a signed letter from your Parent or Guardian telling us that you will be allowed to attend the weekend. (We are insured and you will be cared for properly.) If you or your parent or guardian would like to call us to talk about it first then please contact Jenny Gordon who will be happy to help you with your query.

The person you write to is called Jenny Gordon, Project Manager, Activate Performing Arts, 27 West Borough, Wimborne, Dorset BH1 1LT

Tel. 077515 25200 or email jennygordon@activateperformingarts.org.uk

The deadline for your letters is Monday 5th May 2008. We’ll argue about who the final ten are and then get in touch soon after that.

Have fun…we look forward to hearing from you!

Jenny, Antony and all the people at Activate, Wave, DepARTure, v-Team and National Trust Brownsea Island
